FRIDAY, MAY 23, 2003

The incumbent Cherokee Nation chief faces his old rival in tomorrow's tribal election.

Chief Chad Smith defeated Robert Byrd four years ago. Byrd believes Cherokee voters are ready for a change in leadership.

Two others are also candidate for the chief position. A run-off, if necessary, will be held July 26.
