MONDAY, APRIL 14, 2003

The Arizona Republic in an editorial today says it's time to stop making "excuses" against renaming Squaw Peak to Piestewa Peak in honor of Lori Piestewa, the Hopi woman killed in action in Iraq.

The paper responds to concerns that the peak can't be changed because federal and state rules require a five-year waiting period for name involving deceased individuals. "They can be changed, just as easily as the officials who develop and carry them out," the paper says of the rules.

The paper also says responds to concerns that the change is wrongly based on "emotional loss." "Maybe. But sometimes emotion is good, healing, inspirational."
