Tribal leaders at the 12th annual National Indian Gaming Association membership meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, warned of attacks on tribal sovereignty.

"Make no mistake, my friends, we are at war," said Anthony Pico, chairman of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians of California, as reported by the Associated Press.

"The white man never sleeps. He's always after what you've got," said Tim Wapato, a former NIGA executive director. "You've got to fight this every day."

The $12 billion Indian gaming industry has drawn concern from lawmakers and scrutiny from the media for alleged lack of federal oversight and regulation.
