MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2002

The Crow Tribe of Montana will hold a primary election October 19 to replace indicted ex-chairman Clifford Bird in Ground.

Candidates will be required to pay a $500 filing fee to run. The fee drew debate at a Crow Legislature meeting on Saturday.

The general election will be held November 9.

Bird in Ground pleaded not guilty to stealing tribal funds to buy vehicles for family members and associates. He resigned in a letter dated September 5.
