Kan. considers relocating parts of Haskell wetlands
Tuesday, December 16, 2003

The Kansas Department of Transportation is considering moving parts of the wetlands near Haskell Indian Nations University.

Tribes, students and alumni consider the wetlands to be sacred. It is believed there are remains of alumni buried there.

The state has been given approval, by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to run a highway extension through the wetlands. The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation of Kansas plans to file a lawsuit to stop the plans, an attorney for the tribe said.
