Senate panel approves judge on party-line vote
Friday, October 3, 2003

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 10-9 on Thursday to approve the nomination of Charles W. Pickering Sr. to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

All Democrats voted against Pickering, whose civil rights records they say is paltry. They plan to filibuster his nomination the Senate floor.

If confirmed, Pickering would hear cases affecting tribes in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. The 5th Circuit has been negative to tribes on gaming and sovereignty cases.
