Decision on Nipmuc Nation recognition delayed
Wednesday, September 17, 2003

The Bureau of Indian Affairs says it needs more time to make a final decision on the federal recognition of two Nipmuc tribes from Massachusetts.

According to a letter cited by The Norwich Bulletin, BIA recognition director R. Lee Fleming says the sheer volume of material submitted by the tribes requires more consideration. Some of the information was submitted electronically.

Former assistant secretary Neal McCaleb proposed to deny federal acknowledgment to the Nipmuc Nation and a rival faction. The final decision is due next May.
