N.M. tribe not worried about paying off $88M debt
Thursday, August 14, 2003

Santa Ana Pueblo in New Mexico owes $87.6 million in debt but tribal officials aren't worried about paying it off, The Albuquerque Journal reports.

The tribe sought $62 million in state financing to restructure its debt payments. But Gov. Bill Richardson (D) vetoed the deal last week after questions were raised.

The tribe has experienced a financial downturn in the past couple of years but has never missed a payment on its current debt, Pueblo Gov. Myron Armijo said. The tribe has had to delay some accounts payable to make ends meet, he said.
