North Dakota tribe accused of mismanaging bison herd
Friday, April 9, 2004
A disgruntled employee of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation says the North Dakota tribe has failed to take care of its bison herd, causing animals to die. Ted Siers gave The Bismarck Tribune a 14-page statement of his complaints about the tribe's management practices. He claims he told tribal leaders of the problems but they failed to act. The health of the bison herd has been questioned for the past two years. A veterinarian said that 34 bison died on the reservation this past winter. The herd has upwards of 660 bison. But a second veterinarian brought in by the bison program director challenged that account. The second vet said the herd was in satisfactory condition but that the tribe could make some improvements.
