Navajo lawmakers vindicated with ruling on school

Navajo Nation council delegates say they aren't surprised an administrative law judge ruled in their favor in a dispute over a Bureau of Indian Affairs school.

The council's Education Committee transferred control of the Kayenta Community School from a school board to another entity after discovering excessive travel expenses. This led the BIA to take control of the school. The Navajo Nation's executive branch backed the BIA.

But a Department of Interior judge last week ruled that BIA official Aurene Martin ignored the law. The judge recommended the BIA return control to the Navajo Nation.
