BIA says Navajo Nation ceded control of school

The Bureau of Indian Affairs says it will resume control of a school on the Navajo Nation. In a letter to Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr., principal deputy assistant secretary Aurene Martin said the tribe retroceded control over the Kayenta Community School. She said the tribe is unable to meet its financial obligations to the school and that the decision was effectively immediately. Some tribal leaders are questioning the decision. But Martin said it was based on an opinion from Navajo Nation attorney general Louis Denetsosie, who said the tribe hadn't followed procedures to assume control of the school. Get the Story:
