Seminole Tribe works with NIGC to keep casinos open
Thursday, February 26, 2004

The Seminole Tribe of Florida has been meeting with the National Indian Gaming Commission to ensure their gaming operations are complying with federal law.

Tribal officials who attended the United South and Eastern Tribes conference in Washington, D.C., earlier this month also met with NIGC chairman Phil Hogen. Yesterday, they resumed talks in Florida, where Hogen said the focus was on "the future."

Tribal leaders have agreed to cut down on lavish spending. In the past, each council member was given $5 million to $10 million to use as they wish. Some of the money was given to tribal members for various needs.

The tribe also says it will look at casino machines that Hogen claims are illegal. The state has refused to negotiate a gaming compact with the tribe and the Bush administration rescinded rules that would have helped the tribe.
