House Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs takes testimony on tribal bills

The House Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs is holding a legislative hearing on bills affecting tribal homelands, Indian health and economic development
Three bills are on the agenda for the hearing on Tuesday afternoon. They follow:
H.R.6917, a bill to take certain land into trust for the Las Vegas Tribe of Paiute Indians. The bill transfers about 3,156 acres from the Bureau of Land Management into trust for the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe. The land is located north of the tribe’s reservation in Nevada.
H.R.8473, the Veterinary Services to Improve Public Health in Rural Communities Act. The bill authorizes the Indian Health Service to issue funds to tribes for public health veterinary services and to enter into self-determination contracts for the same purpose.
H.R.8954, the Tribal Regulatory Reform Implementation Act of 2026. The bill transfers certain tribal economic development programs from the Department of Commerce to the Department of the Interior (DOI). More specifically, the Regulatory Reform and Business Development on Indian Lands Authority, a panel of tribal and business leaders that examines barriers to economic development in Indian Country, will be overseen by DOI.
