The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs is once again taking a close look at public safety in Indian Country.
The committee will hear from federal officials at an oversight hearing on Wednesday afternoon. The gathering follows a listening session in March that drew testimony from dozens of tribal and Indian Country leaders.
“This committee takes public safety in Native communities very seriously,” Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), the chairman of the legislative panel, said of the March 12 session. “We recognize the diversity of needs — from law enforcement funding to restoring tribal criminal jurisdiction — and want to hear about your priorities to make your communities safer.”
