NAFOA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOINS CENTER FOR INDIAN COUNTRY DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

Yesterday, the Center for Indian Country Development (CICD) at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis welcomed five new members to their Leadership Council including NAFOA’s Executive Director, Rico Frias (Chihene Nde Nation).

“I want to thank Director Casey Lozar and the rest of the CICD team for the opportunity to serve on their Leadership Council. Their research and policy work plays an important role for Tribal economies, and I thank them for allowing me to offer my perspective on how we can best serve Indian Country,” said Rico Frias.

Frias will also be serving on the Leadership Council with NAFOA Board Secretary, Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Chief Executive Melanie Benjamin.

MALERBA SWORN IN AS 1ST NATIVE AMERICAN IN US TREASURER POST

From VOA News: “Mohegan Chief Marilynn “Lynn” Malerba was sworn in Monday as the Treasurer of the United States, the first Native American to hold that office.

Her signature will now appear alongside Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on U.S. currency.

Yellen hailed the appointment at the Treasury Department ceremony as a sign of the Biden administration’s “respect for, and commitment toward, our nation-to-nation relationship, trust and treaty responsibilities, and tribal sovereignty and self-determination.”

“For all our progress — there is more work to do to strengthen our nation-to-nation relationship with tribal governments,” Yellen said in prepared remarks.

They were joined by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to lead that department, and members of Treasury’s Tribal Advisory Committee.”

Treasurer Malerba will be speaking at the NAFOA 2022 Fall Finance & Tribal Economies Conference for the General Session on Monday, October 3.

3. YOUNG PROFESSIONALS:

LEARN FROM ANYWHERE AT ANY TIME WITH CAREER BASICS

The NAFOA Institute Career Basics is a free online career readiness and personal finance program designed for 18-26-year-old Native American youths.

The program offers coursework that provides opportunities for participants to improve career readiness, and personal finance skills, and advance their understanding of issues impacting tribal economies.

Career Basics is also designed to prepare youth for the NAFOA Leadership Summit. Youth ages 20-26 years old participating in Career Basics are invited to apply for the NAFOA Leadership Summit.

4. TRAINING:

BASIC FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND AUDIT PREPARATION

October 11-13, 2022, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm Central Time

This 3-day virtual training will provide an orientation to basic standards of accounting and GAAP, financial statements, and accounting transactions in a typical small Tribe/TDHE, and implementation of a strong financial management system and related internal controls in order to comply with the general provisions of 2 CFR Part 200.302 Financial Management, as well as compliance with the NAHASDA statutes and regulations. Participants will be given resources and tools that the HUD/ONAP program recipients (Tribes and TDHEs) can utilize to prepare for and be “audit ready” for their annual audit of their Financial Statements and Single Audit.

5. JOBS:

EASTERN BAND OF CHEROKEE INDIANS TRIBAL COUNCIL IS SEEKING LEGISLATIVE FINANCIAL DIRECTOR

Provides oversight support to the Tribal Council related to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) financial and budgetary matters, as well as monitoring and reporting of the EBCI’s appropriation legislation. Performs other appropriation duties supporting the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ Legislative Branch’s goals and objectives.
