House Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States hosts legislative hearing

Presiding: The Honorable Teresa Leger Fernández, Chair The House Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States is getting back to work with a legislative hearing. Five bills are on the agenda for the hearing on Tuesday at 12pm Eastern. They follow:
• H.J.Res.55, the Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole Protecting Family Legacies Act. The resolution provides for Congressional ratification of amendments to the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act. The amendments were enacted into law by the Hawaii Legislature in 2017.
• H.R.441, a bill to transfer property from the Indian Health Service to the Tanana Tribal Council. The property is located in Tanana, Alaska, and will be used for health care purposes.
• H.R.2402, the Winnebago Land Transfer Act of 2021. The bill places lands into trust for the Winnebago Tribe and declares it to be part of the tribe’s reservation. The lands are located in Nebraska and in Iowa.
• H.R.4881, the Old Pascua Community Land Acquisition Act. The bill places land into trust for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and declares it to be part of the tribe’s reservation. The land is located in Tucson, Arizona, and will be eligible for gaming purposes.
• H.R.5221, the Urban Indian Health Confer Act. The bill amends the Indian Health Care Improvement Act to require the Indian Health Service and other agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services to “confer, to the maximum extent practicable, with urban Indian organizations.”
The subcommittee is set to hear from three panels of witnesses, including lawmakers, federal officials and tribal and Indian leaders. The witness list follows:

The subcommittee is part of the larger House Committee on Natural Resources. This is the subcommittee’s first hearing since July and the first meeting since Congress went on recess for most of the month of August.
