The University of Utah announced a scholarship fund for members of the Ute Tribe.

The scholarship fund is the result of a memorandum of understanding that the tribe and the university signed in April. The agreement recognizes the tribe's interest in the "Utes" nickname at the university.

“We welcome all positive educational opportunities for Ute and other American Indian youth,” Forrest Cuch, a tribal member who will serve on the scholarship committee, said in a press release. “Scholarships will be a strong encouragement to our kids to continue their educations.”

The scholarships will amount to $8,000 per year, or $4,000 per semester. They being funded by combination of merchandise sales, private donors and other sources, according to the press release.
