Oneida Nation poll shows support for a new Washington mascot

The Oneida Nation of New York released a poll that found support for the elimination of the Washington professional football team's racist mascot.

Some 59 percent of adults in the Washington, D.C., region said American Indians and Alaska Natives have a right to be offended at the name. When asked whether eliminating the mascot would affect their support of the team, 55 percent said no, according to the results.

"As proud sponsors of the NFL, we want to see the league succeed and hope that the Washington team will finally take this important step, which would reflect positively on the them and the NFL," Ray Halbritter, the tribe's representative, said in a press release.

The tribe is sponsoring the Change the Mascot campaign to eliminate the name.
