The city council in Solvang, California, voted unanimously not to take a position on a land-into-trust application submitted by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.

The tribe plans to use part of a 1,400-acre site for housing. The application has generated significant controversy and there was talk of a recall after the vote, The Santa Maria Times reported.

The council also voted 3-2 against appealing the tribe's land consolidation plan. The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors has decided to fight the Bureau of Indian Affairs on that issue.

The BIA is accepting comments on a draft environmental assessment until October 7 but local officials are asking for an extension.
