Rival chairman of Spirit Lake Nation won't try to take over job

Roger Yankton Sr., will continue to serve as chairman of the Spirit Lake Nation of North Dakota.

Tribal members voted to remove Yankton from office at a general council meeting on Sunday. They chose Leander (Russ) McDonald as their new leader.

But McDonald said he won't try to take over the chairman's post. He met with Yankton and they both agreed that the tribal constitution requires a petition to schedule a recall vote.

Until that happens, McDonald said he will remain on the sidelines.
