Oregon tribe seeks to acquire ancestral territory from BLM

The Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians in Oregon are seeking to regain 14,500 acres of ancestral territory.

A draft proposal of the land transfer was released this week. A bill could be introduced in the 113th Congress.

"This is the first step towards righting an historic wrong," Chairman Bob Garcia said in a press release.

The lands are currently held by the Bureau of Land Management. They will be placed in trust, according to the draft proposal.
