Death of Wayne Burke, Pyramid Lake chairman, ruled suicide

The death of Wayne Burke, the chairman of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe of Nevada, has been ruled a suicide.

Burke died on Sunday. The Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office said the cause was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“With his veterans' affairs initiatives, statewide and nationally, he advocated on behalf of all Native American veterans,” Chairwoman Sherry Rupert told The Nevada Appeal. “The impacts of his death will be felt far and wide, not just in his tribe.”

The tribe is hosting a memorial service for Burke next Tuesday.
