BIA reviews Spirit Lake Nation self-determination contracts

The Bureau of Indian Affairs will make a decision soon whether to take over certain self-determination contracts from the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation.

The BIA has been sending teams to the reservation to look at social services contracts. An August 2011 review found "serious deficiencies" but the agency hasn't made a decision on a takeover.

“It’s just based on what we find out there” Yvonne LaRocque, the self-determination officer for the BIA’s Great Plains Region, told The Grand Forks Herald.

The tribe has come under fire amid the deaths of three children on the reservation and amid reports of child abuse.
