"The "Navajo" hip flask, panties and other items are gone from the website of retailer Urban Outfitters. Or rather, the products are still there, but they no longer carry the unauthorized name of North America's largest tribe.
The Navajo Nation successfully defended its trademarked name. And we can all applaud, because this is a valuable resource for both the tribe and the state.
The Urban Outfitters case illustrates the challenges and importance of protecting this asset.
As recently as Tuesday, the retailer had nearly two dozen products with Navajo in their names. The panties, modeled in a revealing photo, were particularly tacky. And the flask, considering the difficult struggle with alcohol abuse on the reservation, was jarringly inappropriate."
