Chehalis Tribe and county enter mediation over taxation dispute

The Chehalis Tribe and Thurston County, Washington, have entered into mediation in a taxation dispute.

The tribe owns 51 percent of Great Wolf Lodge, a water park. The facility is located on trust land but the county says it can impose a tax on the 49 percent of the business that is owned by Great Wolf Resorts Inc., a non-Indian company.

Judge Benjamin Settle sided with the county in a decision last year. But he ordered both sides into mediation while the case is pending before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The first meeting was held December 2, 2010. Another one will take place soon.
