Editorial: Indian journalists needed in nation's newsrooms

"Today, about 40 Native American high school juniors and seniors from across the country are finishing a weeklong workshop in the Black Hills, one that exposes many of them to the world of journalism for the first time.

The students' work during the annual Crazy Horse Journalism Workshop holds great significance.

Journalists succeed in their mission only to the extent that their work accurately reflects the communities they serve. That makes diverse newsrooms essential to good journalism.

However, among the journalists working in the nation's newsrooms, fewer than 1 percent are Native Americans.

For 12 years, the Crazy Horse Journalism Workshop has been working diligently to help improve those numbers. The workshop identifies talented young people, many of whom come from this region, who show promise of developing into good journalists."
