Dispute ties up $38M in funds for Stoney Nakoda First Nation

The Stoney Nakoda First Nation in Alberta could lose out on $38 million in federal funds amid a dispute among tribal leaders.

The Stoney Nation is made up of three bands and all are required to approve the budget. But Chief Ernest Wesley and council members for two of the bands are refusing, due to concerns about "irregularities," Wesley said.

Without the money, the Stoney Nation could be forced to make layoffs and cut services. Federal funds make up 50 percent of the Stoney Nation's $100 million budget.

"We're monitoring it closely," Glenn Luff, a spokesperson for the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, told The Calgary Herald.
