The district attorney in Cayuga County, New York, plans to bring criminal charges against the Cayuga Nation despite a court ruling that supported the tribe's rights.
On May 11, the The New York Court of
Appeals said Cayuga County and Seneca County lacked jurisdiction to raid two tribal smoke shops. But attorney in Cayuga County has other ideas.
"I’m trying to prosecute them for possessing untaxed cigarettes with the intent to sell them to non-Indians,’’ Jon Budelmann told The Syracuse Post-Standard.
The tribe plans to sue the counties for the illegal raid.
