The Navajo Election Administration has stopped accepting candidate applications for the Navajo Nation Council in response to a tribal court injunction.
Director Edison Wauneka was processing applications for 88 seats on the council. But Judge Carol Perry said that went against the will of tribal members, who voted last year to reduce the size of the council to 24 seats.
The tribe has yet to implement the downsized council, which will be the subject of a Navajo Nation Supreme Court hearing next Tuesday, April 20.
It's not known when the court will issue a decision. Wauneka said few candidates have filed for council seats amid the confusion.
