Quapaw chairman named to panel in sacred site dispute
John Berrey, the chairman of the Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma, has been named to a panel that will study the impacts of the controversial Cape Wind energy project in Massachusetts.

Berrey and four others were named to the panel by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. They have been asked to provide an opinion about the impact of the project on historic sites, cultural sites and sacred site.

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe say the 440-foot turbines that are part of the project will block their view of the sun and disrupt burial grounds and archaeological sites at Nantucket Sound. The sound was dry land that was occupied by Wampanoag ancestors.

The panel is visiting Massachusetts on March 22 to learn more about the project. A report to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is due by April 14. He has said he will make a final decision on the project.
