Don Garnier, a former council member for the Oglala Sioux Tribe of
South Dakota, was sentenced to eight months in federal prison on drug charges.
Garnier pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute less than 50 kilograms of marijuana. He was arrested in New Mexico along with another man in September 2007.
Garnier was forced to resign from the tribal council after being charged. The tribe tried to impose mandatory drug tests on council members but later suspended them.
