The Senate Indian Affairs
Committee will hold a confirmation hearing this Thursday, May 7, for Larry
EchoHawk to be assistant secretary of Indian affairs at the Department of the Interior.
EchoHawk is a member of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma. He served as Idaho's attorney general from 1991-1995 and was the first Native American elected to a statewide office. He also served in the Idaho Legislature.
If confirmed, EchoHawk would be the second Pawnee to lead the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The first was Kevin Gover, who served during the Clinton administration.
EchoHawk is a longtime friend of Secretary Ken Salazar. Both have been active in Democratic politics in the West.
