A committee that is studying the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota started its work on Thursday.
Debate quickly turned to tribal views. Opponents say the committee should defer to tribal leaders, who have opposed the name, while supporters say tribal members who support the "Sioux" should be a part of the discussion.
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has voted against the name. The Spirit Lake Dakotah
Nationhas not taken a position for or against and some tribal members are calling for a referendum.
The committee plans to meet with both tribes to discuss the issue.
