Two early critics of Larry
EchoHawk have changed their mind about his expected nomination as head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Attorney Scott Crowell wrote an anti-EchoHawk letter that criticized the former Idaho attorney general's stance on gaming. But Crowell told Indian Country Today that EchoHawk appears to have made amends for his record.
“I do find great encouragement in his recent words and if appointed, I wish upon him great success and accomplishments in furthering the interests of Indian country,” Crowell told ICT.
Scott Wheat, an associate of Crowell, initially said he was “committed to working tirelessly to derail Larry’s appointment.” But he is also convinced by EchoHawk's recent outreach to Idaho tribes who were affected by the gaming issue.
"It takes a lot to admit wrongdoing and to commit to taking a better road in the future. Larry deserves credit for that," Wheat told ICT.
