Commissioners in Meade County, South Dakota, approved liquor licenses for four venues near sacred Bear Butte.
The most controversial approval was for the Broken Spoke Campground, whose owner originally planned a Native theme for his venue but ran into opposition. Lakota activists say the bar is too close to Bear Butte, where they go to pray and hold ceremonies.
The Buffalo Chip Campground also won a new license. Tribal leaders tried to meet Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) when he spoke there during his presidential campaign but were unable to contact him.
