Protest against tribal flags at 'Fighting Sioux' arena
About 40 people held a protest outside the Ralph Engelstad Arena at the University of North Dakota. The protesters opposed the arena's decision to fly the flags of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation. They said the continued use of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo ignores tribal views on the issue. Members of both tribes, however attended a ceremony inside the arena and said they were happy to see the flags flown. The arena operates independently of UND, whose leaders agreed to stop using "Fighting Sioux" if they couldn't get the tribe to support the name. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe passed a resolution that opposes the name. The Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation has a resolution that neither supports nor opposes the name. Get the Story:
