Members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe won't be allowed to vote on the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.
The tribal council passed a resolution that bars a referendum on the issue. The resolution cites the divisive history of the nickname and a recent sorority party at UND in which participants dressed up as Indians.
The tribe has long opposed the "Sioux" nickname and logo. As part of a settlement with the NCAA, UND agreed to stop using the symbols within three years -- unless it can gain support of two Sioux tribes in the state.
