The Environmental Protection Agency approved an air
permit for the Navajo
Nation's controversial power plant.
The decision came on the last day possible under a court order. The tribe sued the EPA for failing to act on an application that was submitted more than four years ago.
The Desert Rock
Energy Project is a venture between the tribe and Sithe Global Power of Texas.
The tribe says the $2.5 billion coal-fired power plant will generate jobs and
revenue.
Opponents include Navajos who live near the power plant site in Shiprock, New Mexico. Gov. Bill Richardson (D) said the state will challenge the EPA's decision.
