The Environmental Protection Agency is due to make a decision on an air
permit for the Navajo Nation's controversial power plant.
Opponents don't believe the EPA will meet the deadline that was imposed by a court order. New Mexico Environment Secretary Ron Curry said the public submitted 1,200 comments on the permit.
"Their regulations say they must respond to each comment before issuing the permit," Curry told The Santa Fe New Mexican. "We don't believe they can get that done by July 31."
The Desert Rock Energy
Project is a venture between the tribe and Sithe Global Power of Texas. The tribe says the $2.5 billion coal-fired power plant will generate jobs and revenue.
