Rep. Doolittle subject of re-election rumors

Rep. John Doolittle (R-California) has called his supporters and aides to a meeting on Thursday for "news" about his re-election plans.

Doolittle has been under scrutiny for his ties to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. He inserted comments into the Congressional Record that praised the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, Abramoff's biggest client, despite being opposed to gaming. Doolittle's wife, Julia, used to do consulting work for Abramoff.

The FBI raided Doolittle home and his aides have been subpoenaed by grand juries. A top aide, however, insisted Doolittle was still running for re-election amid rumors that he will drop his campaign.

Only one lawmaker, former Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio), has been convicted in connection with the Abramoff scandal. Former Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Montana) was the target of inquiries but the Justice Department last week dropped its probe, citing a recent court ruling that limits investigations of members of Congress.
