Editorial: Long overdue honor for Woody Keeble
"It took a while, but Master Sgt. Woodrow Wilson Keeble finally was awarded the nation’s highest military honor Monday during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. Keeble was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism displayed when he saved the lives of fellow soldiers during a battle in Korea. Keeble, who died in 1982, is the first Sioux Indian to receive the honor. He was a member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux tribe. Keeble was born in South Dakota but lived most of his life in Wahpeton. He was also a veteran of World War II and received more than 30 citations, including Distinguished Service Cross and four Purple Hearts. Keeble’s fellow soldiers had twice recommended him for the Medal of Honor, but the paperwork was lost. Senators from North Dakota and South Dakota introduced legislation to award the medal to Keeble. The case was reviewed, and the Secretary of the Army, the Secretary of Defense and the president agreed that Keeble should receive the medal." Get the Story:
