Makah Nation charges five for unauthorized hunt
The Makah Nation of Washington charged five tribal members who killed a gray whale without permission. The five are being charged in tribal court. The Indian Civil Rights Act limits punishment to a $5,000 fine and one year in prison for each of the defendants. Separately, the U.S. Attorney in Western Washington is charging the men with conspiracy, unlawful taking of a marine mammal, and unauthorized whaling. They could each face up to one year in jail and a $100,000 fine. The September 8 hunt was done without tribal of federal approval. The tribe is currently seeking a permit under the Marine Mammals Protection to hunt a whale. Get the Story:
