"It's reassuring that leaders of the Makah Indian Tribe have denounced last weekend's unauthorized killing of a gray whale off the coast of this state.
But it's not enough.
They were in the nation's capital this week to convince members of Congress that tribal efforts to resume traditional whale hunts on a limited, controlled basis should not be derailed by the actions of five renegade whalers.
At this juncture, we're not as interested in their success at lobbying members of Congress as we are in prosecuting the tribal members for a hunt that was illegal under both tribal and federal law."
