A group of veterans from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation has been on the University of North Dakota campus to discuss the school's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.
The veterans met with the American Indian Student Services on Tuesday. Staff members said the controversial nickname affects academics and Indian students.
The veterans also met with outgoing UND President Charles Kupchella, who had started a process to consider the future of the nickname before being overruled by the state Board of Higher Education.
The school has since agreed to get rid of the "Fighting Sioux" within three years unless it can get approval of Sioux tribes.
Even if the nickname and logo go away, the Ralph Engelstad Arena, which contains thousands of "Indian head" logos, hasn't said it will remove them.
