The University of North Dakota spent about $850,000 to defend its "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.
The school exhausted a legal defense fund set up by alumni. Some money is still owed to lawyers who worked on the case.
The lawsuit ended with a settlement that calls on UND to eliminate the "Sioux" nickname and logo within three years unless it can get approval by Sioux tribes.
Some Sioux tribes are already on record in opposition to the name.
