Little Shell Chippewa to testify at Senate hearing

The Little Shell Chippewa Tribe of Montana will testify at a Senate Indian Affairs Committee hearing on federal recognition.

The tribe has been seeking recognition for over 100 years. The Clinton administration in May 2000 issued a favorable preliminary decision but the Bush administration has not made a final decision on the tribe's petition.

The tribe is recognized by the state and by other federally recognized tribes in Montana. The state courts also have said the Little Shell are a legitimate Indian tribe.

The hearing takes place tomorrow at 9:30am.
