Little Shell Chippewa Tribe could get state land

The Little Shell Chippewa Tribe of Montana could get its first piece of land if a deal with the state goes through.

The tribe would manage the Morony Dam townsite and perform routine maintenance for the next decade. At the end of the deal, the state would consider donating the land to the tribe.

The tribe won't get any money to manage the site, an issue that split the tribal leadership and resulted in the resignation of vice chairman James Parker Shield. The state has offered $10,000 to hire a grant writer to find additional funds.

The tribe has been recognized by the state but its petition with the Bureau of Indian Affairs is still being finalized.
