President Bush is said to have picked a former federal judge from New York as the next U.S. Attorney General.
The announcement of retired federal judge Michael B. Mukasey to head the Department of Justice could as early as today. His nomination would avoid the opposition Democrats voiced to former Solicitor General Ted Olson, who was said to be a leading contender.
Mukasey was a judge in the Southern District of New York from 1988 to 2006. There aren't any federally-recognized tribes based in the district.
