County seeks to join Saginaw Chippewa lawsuit

A county in Michigan is seeking to join a lawsuit filed by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe over the boundaries of its reservation.

The tribe sued the state in federal court. The lawsuit says the state lacks jurisdiction over all or part of seven townships in Isabella County.

The county now wants to join as a defendant. The federal government has already joined, siding with the tribe.

The tribe says an 1855 executive order and treaties from 1855 and 1864 created the historic Isabella Reservation. The state claims the tribe gave up most of its land.
