Artman still recused on Iroquois tribal issues

Carl Artman, the newly confirmed head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, has recused himself on issues affecting tribes of the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois Confederacy, a spokesperson said.

Artman is a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, whose ancestors were forced to leave New York. The tribe is trying to re-establish ties to its homeland and is part of the 250,000-acre Oneida land claim.

Artman says he won't make decisions affecting his tribe or the Oneida Nation of New York. The New York Oneidas have a 17,000-acre land-into-trust application pending at the BIA.

Artman signed a recusal as assistant solicitor for Indian affairs. It's not clear whether he will have to sign a different one after he is sworn in as assistant secretary for Indian affairs.
